Tips and tricks for cleaning awnings perfectly

Corradi covers allow you to enjoy your outdoor space for all months of the year, creating precious spaces for relaxing and enjoying the season and creating hybrid indoor and outdoor environments where light and nature become part of our single domestic living space. If you have been lucky enough to select an aluminium or wood pergola from Corradi, it is important to understand the simple maintenance routine that will enable you to extend the life and protect the canvas against mould and humidity, maintaining its performance and beauty.

Keeping your Corradi awning in optimal health!

The technical fabrics used by Corradi guarantee high performance, but the canvas used in outdoor covers – exposed on a daily basis to the sun and the weather – are subject by their nature to certain risks, like small abrasions, folds or scratches, but above all humidity and mould risks that can be reduced through proper maintenance. To avoid any undue risk to your fabrics you should look to avoid heavy rains known in the beginning of summer and exceptionally high winds.  To assist, Corradi provides a variety of optional rain and wind sensors that are fully compatible and provide valuable back up on the occasion where you are caught out and have not retracted your Corradi roofline.  If you have not checked your sensors for some time, this is a perfect opportunity to check batteries and plugs to ensure they are in good working order.

Canvas Maintenance

To keep the canvas of outdoor furniture or external awnings from being ruined by mould, it is always advisable to take care not to retract it when the units are still wet and to retract them only when perfectly dry. To keep canvas structures clean and tidy, a soft brush on a regular basis is useful to lift any collections of dust or dirt that have built up over the dry winter months, while in the case of PVC-coated fabrics a sponge should be used instead of a brush to remove dirt, dust and pollen.

Acrylic Maintenance

Until a few years ago, acrylic was the most used material for sun canopies on awnings or in traction canopies, and fixed covers. It is resistant to the elements and is treated to be waterproof. To care for your acrylic canvas, use a soft brush on the surface before washing it with warm water and soap. You will then have to rinse thoroughly and allow the canvas to drip dry without using electric tools or ironing.

Polyester Maintenance

Polyester is a more innovative fabric and therefore now used more frequently for outdoor coverings as it performs better than acrylic in terms of durability and protection against the effects of sun and harmful UV.  In addition, it is water-proof and does not require special care so for cleaning, you can follow the same instructions as for acrylic canvas, first using a soft brush and then washing with warm water and mild soap.

Corradi’s polyester fabric, the innovative Eclissi, is standard on all Pergotenda models and offers a water-proof canvas guaranteed to considerably reduce heat. The Corradi range also includes LAC 650 SL, a PVC – coated polyester fabric that is extremely reliable in terms of protection against sun, rain, and wind, but it is also possible to choose other technical fabrics like:

  • Stam 6002, a tough polyester coated with PVC that is extremely soft, fireproof and offers darkening when glare is prevalent
  • Soltis 86 and Soltis W96, fabrics that are resistant to weather and UV rays and are capable of protecting against the heat; the W9 version also being waterproof. To clean Soltis 86 and Soltis W96 awnings we recommend using a damp cloth or brush, or even a low-pressure water jet with cold water, while the only solvent allowed is alcohol (1 litre diluted in 10 litres of water).
  • Precontraint 502 Satin, a polyester with a PVC layer lacquered on both sides offers durability and long-lasting performance whilst offering greater architectural freedom and unique characteristics like translucency and extreme softness. It is also available in a wide range of colours.

And do not forget that good maintenance also requires proper ventilation of outdoor spaces by way of sliding doors or windows, shutters or side awnings structures like wire guide or Zip screen.  These all act to lower humidity levels under the structures and thus prevent condensation which can be especially detrimental to PVC fabrics. With the lead up to summer, now is the perfect time to provide some timely maintenance to your Corradi and supporting awning structures to keep them looking their best and making the experience of outdoor living even more enjoyable!
